Wasps boss Lee Blackett said he was ‘aware’ of the source of rumours linking his players with moves away from the club.

New Zealand forward Vaea Fifita was ‘confirmed’ by some sources as moving to Scarlets last week and Jimmy Gopperth was rumoured to be joining Leicester Tigers.

That is in addition to longer-held speculation that Malakai Fekitoa is heading to Munster ahead of the 2022/23 season.

While the potential loss of the three New Zealanders would be difficult for Wasps fans to accept, allowing 38-year-old Gopperth to move to the side he helped defeat with three second-half penalties on Sunday would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Many fans assume the club legend will transition into a player/coach role, having spent four years honing his skills with level seven club Nuneaton Old Edwardians alongside his professional playing duties.

When asked if Gopperth was somebody Blackett would like to keep at the club next season, he instead focused on the source of the speculation.

He said: “I think there’s always going to be rumours that are flying around, because I think it’s agents’ jobs to get it out in the media and speculate.

“We’re very aware of where these rumours come from, we won’t be commenting on any of it.”

Wasps have already confirmed that Thomas Young, who made his 150th Wasps appearance against Tigers from the bench, will not be at the club next season as he rejoins his father Dai at Cardiff in a move that will help extend his international career.

Wasps’ only confirmed signing so far is Springboks World Cup-winning prop Vincent Koch from Saracens.
