‘Real Mexican streetfood’ that has caused a stir during pop-up appearances in Leamington Spa is heading to Coventry – permanently.

The Good Food Cartel spent ‘lockdown 2’ operating out of The Somerville Arms serving up delicious tacos and burgers from a catering trailer.

Now that residency is complete, the operation is now heading to Coventry where it will be permanently based at the Hearsall Inn in Earlsdon.

The first food orders are set to go out of the window on Tuesday, December 2 despite Coventry being placed in the ‘high risk’ tier three following the end of the lockdown period.

What can people expect

Authentic Mexican street food is the main theme of the Good Food Cartel with tacos made from blue corn loaded with ingredients cooked fresh before the customer.

Toppings include Aberdeen slow cooked brisket, pulled pork joint, grilled chicken thighs and jackfruit as well as jalapenos, pineapple salsa, pink onion, salsa verde and much more.

There’s some mouth-watering burgers on offer too with beef, chicken and halloumi variations and toppings such as tortilla crisps, hot chilli sauce, guacamole, gherkins and honey mustard mayo.

Nachos, curly fries, elote (grilled mexican street corn) also feature along with buttermilk marinated southern filled chick thighs available in a burger or a wrap.

What they had to say…

Business owner Michael Webber said: “We are without any doubt the only place in the area offering the taste of authentic Mexican street food.

“Our tacos are made from blue corn, hand pressed and cooked fresh in front of the customer. Variety of toppings including the Aberdeen Angus brisket cooked in jalapeño peppers for 16 hours, slow cooked pork shoulder in Al Pastor style as well as chicken in chipotle, lime and coriander.

“Our vegetarian customers can enjoy the jackfruit tacos cooked in spicy chipotle and tomato sauce.

“Other popular items on our menu include nachos loaded with cheese sauce, guacamole, jalapeños, sour cream and salsa casera. Elote, a Mexican version of corn on cob covered in lime juice,  homemade honey mustard mayo, cheese and mixture of chilies.

“In addition to Mexican flavours, we will be serving our famous burgers.

“Locally-sourced steak beef (Crow Hill, Nuneaton) mixed with a selection of spices and hand rolled into a perfect burger.

“All served in a fresh brioche bun from Andrew Davies bakery in Kenilworth.”

What have customers said…

The Good Food Cartel was first based outside The Arches pub in Nuneaton. From 39 Just Eat reviews it received an average customer rating of 5.56 out of 6.

George said: “Don’t always leave reviews but this one needs a recommendation. Best burgers and tacos you can get, everything well packaged separately, no mess. Food hot, tasty, great service. Definitely will order again.”

Daniel said: “Having grown up in Texas I like to think I know a thing or 3 about tacos. I was genuinely surprised to find such good tacos, especially in Nuneaton. Both the beef and pork were delicious with real corn tortillas. The coriander, onion, and a lime wedge were appreciated and are exactly what you would get in an authentic, family-run, taqueria.”

Aaron said: “Possibly the best burger in Nuneaton. Food is really good quality and arrived hot and fresh. If you double up your burger be prepared to struggle to get your mouth around it!”
