Fans were left baffled (and delighted) after they discovered the crazy challenge contestants were given in the last semi-final of MasterChef. Gregg Wallace started singing the classic tune ‘Buttery Biscuit Bass’ at the start of the show.

Contestants were tasked with the unique challenge of creating a dish inspired by the tune as it hits its tenth anniversary. Gregg sang: “If they can’t have a wobble, wobble, wobble, I need a smack around the face, we demand a buttery biscuit base.”

Describing the challenge, John said: “What they are going to have to do is, they are going to have to be inspired by an extraordinary song. A top 40 chart hit!”

Gregg added that ‘this year was a very important year’ citing the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty as well as the 100th anniversary of the BBC. He went on to say that they were also celebrating their ‘own very special anniversary’ which was the tenth anniversary of the release of ‘Buttery Biscuit Bass.’

John and Gregg also smugly noted that the tune made it into the UK Top 40 and ‘raised money for charity’ at the same time. Although Pookie admitted that she had never actually heard the tune before saying the brief initially made her ‘head spin.’ She went on to say that once she had listened to it she found it ‘quite catchy.’

It appeared Olayemi was not as enthusiastic describing the tune as ‘cringy.’ You can watch it here and see what you think.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the zany challenge based on the memorable tune. @rhithesmeghead said: “I cannot believe they’re actually playing this! Honestly, my week is made! #MasterChef.”

@Emony wrote: “#MasterChef doing a round based on the #ButteryBiscuitBass song – legendary. Absolute TV gold.” @jenandmylo said: “This is the greatest #MasterChef challenge ever.”

Fans were also left in stitches when Gregg sang: ‘I need a smack around the face.’ And some were more than happy to oblige.

@wooliferkins said: “He asked for a slap, who are we to deny Gregggggs request?#MasterChef.” @xanaud echoed: “Eggggggggg ‘singing’ Buttery Biscuit Base I’d definitely give him a slap around the face #MasterChefUK.”

After intense deliberation, John and Gregg decided to send Olayemi home after her dish failed to impress. Solihull contestant Pookie sailed through to finals week and fans could not be happier. @AGildedEye said: “Pookie is a magician. She should have her own restaurant.”
