The booking system at Coventry’s recycling centre, brought in to maintain social distancing, is to stay in place for good.

Bosses at the city council say the response from residents to the system at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in London Road, which has been in place since May, has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

Those wanting to book a slot are asked to provide their vehicle’s number plate so that only visitors who have booked are allowed access to the centre.

Visitors are requested to provide proof of address when they arrive at their allocated time and anyone who tries to enter without a booking slot or proof of address is refused entry.

As part of the move to a permanent system, the council say it will be implementing a quick response system to make the process quicker and smoother for residents.

‘Overwhelmingly positive’

Cllr Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet member for city services, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has meant that we’ve all had to adapt to a new way of life. For the council this has meant we’ve had to adapt to a new way of offering our services.

“The new system at the tip is a great example of how we have actually been able to make improvements

“In the past, traffic for the tip used to extend along London Road with people waiting a long time to get in.

“Now no-one waits very long, cars don’t tail back on to London Road and the team on site have a more even balance during the day which enables them to focus on jobs like keeping the site clean and tidy. It really has been a win-win.

“Of course, we know that not everyone has easy access to a computer – that’s why we also offer slots booked by phone too.

“The response from local people has been overwhelmingly positive too so we thought it only right that we make this a permanent change.

“However, while we are planning for the future beyond this pandemic with this change, it’s vitally important to remember to keep following the social distancing guidelines both on site at the centre and in your day to day lives. As always, thank you for your patience and co-operation.”
