Christian Wade has suffered a setback in his pursuit of becoming a fully-fledged NFL American Football player.
The former Wasps winger sensationally quit rugby union in October 2018 and headed Stateside to commence training in his new sport. His rapid progress was rewarded by the Buffallo Bills who offered him a two-year contract in 2019.
In August that year, and with his first touch of the ball in a pre-season game, he scorched home from 65 yards out against the Panthers. He remained on the Bills’ 90-man roster during the 2019 season.
However, with chances limited to prove himself during this year’s training camp and the cancellation of all pre-Season games due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Wade’s name was included in a 24-man strong released list issued on Saturday as Bills cut their squad to the 53-man NFL limit.
Wade has one more season remaining on his exempt status, meaning he is likely to be retained on the Bills’ practice squad – which is due to be announced in the next 48 hours.
The decision to release Wade from the roster has not gone down well with Bills supporters who took to social media to share their thoughts.
@Gav_Leaf: Guys like Wade, it doesnt matter what he does on the field, there’s always gonna be that “He just hasn’t grown up with Football, he can’t possibly understand it!” thing that most US sources seem to imply. Like Football is unknowable to outsiders.
@Goalofsson_68: I was at the christian wade game, hope he stays on the practice squad
@AgentScarn27: NOT WADE OR DUKEE!!! Come on
@juamat: Damn! Christian Wade.. is gone…
