‘Coventry Moves’ – the opening ceremony for our year as City of Culture has been pushed back to June.
The signature event, which was set to launch our year in the spotlight, was due to take place on May 15.
Billed as the event that would kick off a “summer of surprises”, Coventry Moves will showcase the city, kicking off a major year of cultural events.
CoventryLive reported earlier today (April 1) that we were expecting an announcement from the City of Culture Trust regarding its opening ceremony.
It has now been confirmed that Coventry Moves will take place on June 5 following consultation with partners and stakeholders across the city – including West Midlands Police.
Coventry City of Culture Trust has confirmed that the year of culture will still start on May 15 2021 and run for 12 months.

The Trust have confirmed that our year as City of Culture will still begin on May 15.
But the opening ceremony, Coventry Moves, much of which still remains a secret, will now take place on June 5.
It was originally billed to take place on May 15, which means it has been pushed back by three weeks.
The opening on 15 May will be followed by a significant festival of street art and artist- designed shop windows to welcome visitors as they start to return to the City Centre, as well as a range of events from partner organisations, including the Belgrade Theatre, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and Warwick Arts Centre.
Coventry Moves on 5 June 2021 will kick-start a Summer of Surprises which will also feature events previously announced by the Trust including Tides Within Us, a stunning outdoor experience in Charterhouse Heritage Park, a celebration of community radio and a major Sound Systems event showcasing Coventry’s rich cultural links with Kingston, Jamaica.
