Coventry City fans have voted Gustavo Hamer as their 2021/22 Player of the Year.
The Sky Blues favourite beat off stiff competition from leading scorer Viktor Gyokeres and fellow star midfielder Callum O’Hare to scoop the prestigious award at the club’s annual presentation evening, this year making a return to the CBS Arena with supporters in attendance for the first time in three years due to the pandemic.
The top accolade of the evening is voted for by the fans, and comes after the Brazilian-born Dutch national has turned in some eye-catching and outstanding displays in his second season with the club.
Gyokeres, meanwhile, who takes the golden boot after taking his tally to an impressive 18 goals in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke in the final match of the season, has gained the recognition of his teammates by being voted the Players’ Player of the Year. It’s been a standout campaign for the 23-year-old Sweden international who has stepped up with some strong and powerful displays in his first full season at the level and for the Sky Blues, which has made him one of the club’s top assets.
And completing the main awards was 20-year-old Ian Maatsen who has been awarded Young Player of the Year, as voted for by manager Mark Robins. The Chelsea loan player played in 42 games for the club this season, scoring three goals, and was incredibly unlucky not to have bagged a fourth against the Potters when he had a second half header cleared off the line.
And finally, Jordan Shipley – whom, it was revealed after the Stoke match, is leaving the club this summer – won Goal of the Season, as voted for by the fans, for his superb half volley against QPR back in January at the CBS Arena.
Elsewhere, midfielder Ben Sheaf was voted the Family Zone’s Player of the Year, Callum O’Hare was named JSB Player of the Year, Ryan Howley was awarded the Academy Player of the Year, Fabio Tavares was named Development Player of the Year and Liam Kelly was named Community Player of the Year.
As for the supporters’ club gongs, Gyokeres won the Coventry City London Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award.
There were 26 different players who received votes throughout the season. Gyokeres incredibly received votes in 37 different matches during the season. He received Man of the Match on seven occasions, and was voted in the top three in 18 matches. He received the most votes in a single match, achieving 120 for the home game against Fulham.
Runner up Callum O’Hare pipped Gus Hamer into second place by one vote. Both were to push Viktor for the top spot, especially in the second half of the season. Kyle McFadzean and Ben Sheaf finished fourth and fifth in the voting.
Gyokeres now joins an illustrious group of strikers who have won this coveted award and is the first striker to win it since Gary McSheffrey in 2006. Other strikers who have been crowned CCLSC Player of the Season include Cyrille Regis, David Speedie, Kevin Gallacher, Peter Ndlovu, and Dion Dublin.
Coventry City’s Scandinavian Supporters’ Club voted Callum O’Hare as their Player of the Season.
