Coventry City picked up a valuable Championship point on the road at Barnsley where they failed to hit a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Leo Ostigard went agonisingly close the giving City the lead when he headed onto the underside of the cross bar from a 16th minute corner but there was little to choose between the two sides in a relatively tight first half when the visitors edged the possession.

Coventry’s best outlet was down the left where wing-back Ryan Giles caused the Tykes problems but Robins’s men failed to hit a single effort on target in the opening 45, during which the home side only managed one themselves, and that was straight at Marko Marosi.

Substitute Dominik Frieser headed narrowly wide and Alex Mowatt curled over as Barnsley got at the Sky Blues after the break while at the other end Matty Godden headed wide at the near post in a game when clear cut chances were few and far between for both sides.

Striker Cauley Woodrow and sub Elliot Simoes squandered openings midway through the second period when Robins threw on a second striker in Tyler Walker and attacking midfielder Jordan Shipley in a bid to find a goal.

Both sides went for the win in a frantic last ten minutes full of effort and end to end action but devoid of any real quality to break the deadlock.

STARTING FORMATION: 3-4-2-1

MARKO MAROSI: 7

Only faced one shot in the first half – straight at him – but distributed the ball out reasonably well as City tried to find a way through Barnsley’s high press. Positioned well to make his one and only save after the break.

LEO OSTIGARD: 7.5

Went agonisingly close to scoring from City’s first corner with a powerful header that hit the underside of the bar and bounced out, proving again what a threat he is from set pieces. Defended well.

KYLE McFADZEAN: 8

On top of his game and alert to danger, leading from the back and distributing the ball very well in the first half. Defended solidly throughout to help keep a clean sheet.

DOM HYAM: 7.5

Shifted the ball well on a difficult day when Barnsley’s high press limited their out from the back options. Read the game well and defended well.

FANKATY DABO: 6.5

Thwarted a bit in the first half when full-back Jordan Williams paid close attention to him. More influential in the second half when he sent in a lovely ball into the box, only for the keeper to get there ahead of Godden.

GUSTAVO HAMER; 7.5

Moved the ball neatly into space in a bid to create openings and constantly won possession in the middle of the park in another influential display.

BEN SHEAF: 7

Looked after the ball well and sprayed some decent angled passes as well as driving forward on occasions and getting a couple of shots off. Did a lot of the midfield dirty work before being replaced by fresh kegs as he tired.

RYAN GILES: 8

A decent outlet down the left where he linked up nicely with O’Hare and proved to be City’s best outlet in the opening half.

JAMIE ALLEN: 6

Worked his socks off pressing Barnsley’s defenders when City were out of possession, putting a superb shift, albeit unable to assert his attacking influence on a frustrating afternoon for the lad.

CALLUM O’HARE: 7

Lively and threatening from the off, making himself busy in and around the box, albeit in a frustrating afternoon at Oakwell.

MATTY GODDEN: 6.5

Displayed terrific movement but starved of any decent service in the opening half when the balls didn’t quite fall for him. Continued to work hard after the break but didn’t have a clear cut chance all afternoon as Barnsley kept him at bay.

SUBSTITUTES:

JORDAN SHIPLEY (69 mins, for Sheaf): 6

Put himself about well trying to spark an opening to break the deadlock.

TYLER WALKER (69 mins, for Allen): 6

Got into good positions as City desperately tried to grab a late goal.

Subs (not used): Tom Billson (GK), Michael Rose, Josh Pask, Sam McCallum, Amadou Bakayoko.
