Jet2 has cancelled all summer flights to a number of European holiday destinations, the airline has confirmed.

All flights between the UK and both Croatia and mainland Spain have been axed for the remainder of the summer season.

It is set to have a major impact on Coventry and Warwickshire holidaymakers, with many of the cancelled flights set to depart from Birmingham Airport.

The flights cancelled include destinations such as Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona in Spain, and Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia.

Their final outbound flights departed the UK for these destinations yesterday (Sunday September 6).

A programme of empty outbound flights is now underway, to bring holidaymakers already in Croatia home, and the airline has revealed that customers affected by their decision will have a range of options available to them, including refunds.

According to the airline, the decision to suspend flights and holidays to these destinations comes as a result “of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the current UK government advice.”

They went on to urge that the government consider altering their approach to overseas travel during the pandemic, suggesting that a targeted approach to travel advice would work better than blanket travel bans.

Jet2 statement on Croatia holidays

In response to the cancellations to flights to Croatia, a Jet2 spokesperson said: “Because of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the current UK government advice, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend flights and holidays to Dubrovnik and Split for the rest of Summer 20, with our final outbound flights for the season operating on 6th September.

“We are obviously very disappointed to be making this announcement. Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been dealing with this unprecedented situation, and we are cancelling affected bookings with a full cash refund.

“To give customers more choice when it comes to booking or rebooking their Summer 20 holidays, we recently announced hundreds of new flights to in-demand destinations, representing almost 100,000 additional seats. That demand tells us that customers want to get away for their well-deserved holidays. We continue to urge the government to do more to help holidaymakers by implementing a targeted approach to travel advice, instead of the current blanket ban approach.

“We are operating a programme of empty outbound flights to pick up customers from Dubrovnik and Split, and we are contacting customers where affected to advise them of their options regarding flying back to the UK.

“For flight-only customers who were due to travel back to the UK on flights that are not now operating, we have cancelled and refunded the cost of their original inbound flights, and customers can book another flight should they wish. There is availability on our inbound flights and our pricing reflects this. On the occasion where there is an increased cost, customers can get in touch with us with their booking information and we can assure them that any difference in cost between the original and new fares will be refunded.

“We can assure our customers and partners in Dubrovnik and Split that we remain completely committed to these fantastic destinations. Bookings for next summer are looking strong, and we cannot wait to be back doing what we do best – working with hoteliers and our partners in these destinations to make sure our customers enjoy their well-deserved holidays.”

Spanish travel update

As for flights to Spain, the spokesperson for the airline said: “A spokesperson said: “Because of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the current UK government advice, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend flights and holidays to Mainland Spain (affecting Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona) for the rest of Summer 20.

“We are obviously very disappointed to be making this announcement, as we know how much our customers look forward to their well-deserved holidays in these fantastic destinations. Where customers are affected by any programme changes, we have been repeatedly recognised for how we have been looking after them, offering the option to rebook with no admin fee, a Refund Credit Note or a full cash refund, and we are contacting customers to discuss these options.

“To give customers more choice when it comes to booking or rebooking their Summer 20 holidays, we recently announced hundreds of new flights to in-demand destinations, representing almost 100,000 additional seats. That demand tells us that customers want to get away for their well-deserved holidays.
