Comedian Jimmy Carr will play Coventry this year, it has been announced.
The star, known for for his biting one liners, will play at Empire’s new venue on Hertford Street, bringing his Terribly Funny show to the city on Saturday 17 April.
Carr’s gig will be part of the venue’s Launch Special after moving from its original Far Gosford Street home to its new venue in the heart of Coventry City Centre.
The Empire announced the event on social media, giving potential ticket buyers a tongue-in-cheek warning about Carr’s brand of humour.
Posting on Twitter, Empire wrote: “Jimmy’s brand new show contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Bad things that might have affected you or people you know & love.
“They’re just jokes – Political correctness at a comedy show is like having health & safety at a rodeo.”
The gig is likely to prove popular with comedy fans, and Carr will perform the show twice, first at 6pm and again at 9.30pm.
The venue has given buyers reassurance around how seriously social distancing measures will be taken.
Tickets will be sold in group bookings of two people only and Seats are socially distanced at 1m+ or partitioned.
All audience members will have to wear face coverings at all times while in the venue and drinks ordered through an app.
Sensitisation points, regular cleaning of ‘touch points’ and way one way traffic systems will all be in place.
The venue will also be thoroughly cleaned before the show.
The Empire opening date announced
This morning we reported the new Empire planned to open its doors on April 1, Covid-19 regulations permitting.
Phil Rooney, owner of Empire, said: “We have been working there since June last year so we are quite a way down the line.
“We have knocked all the walls down, built all the dressing rooms.
“We have had to put in new toilets as well and we’re putting down the carpets for the offices. So we’ve done quite a lot.
“There is not much in Coventry City Centre as a central point and for access and getting into the centre to see shows.
“As well as bringing people into the city centre from outside of Coventry it is all positive stuff.
“We are hoping to open for April 1 but that is down to the government in the current situation.”
