An appeal has been launched after plans to build a portable car garage on a Morrisons car park were refused.

Warwick District Council’s planning committee refused permission for the garage at the supermarket on Old Warwick Road in Leamington Spa at a meeting on May 22.

Now Morrisons has lodged an appeal against the decision with the Secretary of State.

While the council previously argued it would have a “negative visual impact” on the site, Morrisons say it would allow people to have car work carried out while doing their shopping.

The garage would consist of a MOT test pod, wheel repair pod and car body repair centre and would take up 18 spaces from the car park.

Planning documents state the pods were due to be located at the entrance to the Morrison’s store, which the council argued would take away from the “soft landscaping scheme and associated tree planting”.

“It is instead now dominated by steel structures, with little in the way of soft landscaping to mitigate the visual impacts,” the documents added.

Comments have also been made by the council about landscaping being unable to take place elsewhere on the site if the structure is allowed to go ahead.
