A strong smell of fuel left residents across Nuneaton puzzled – and forced to close their windows.

They took to social media yesterday (September 30) to try and find out where the smell was coming from.

Complaints spanned from Bermuda to Attleborough and even in Bedworth on Facebook.

One said: “It smelt like someone was burning Jeyes fluid & paper on the Raywoods. Smelt awful.”

Another said:”Its smells like wd-40!”

But the mystery has been solved thanks to an eagle-eyed resident.

They confirmed the foul smell was due to farmers spraying the fields near Bermuda.

Only a few weeks ago, as we reported in our newsletter that a deadline has been set to stop the pong at one of the smelliest parts of Nuneaton.

The Environment Agency confirmed it set the owners of Sarval animal rendering plant, formerly known as De Mulder and Sons, a clear number of actions it has to take following complaints about the pong produced there.

Residents said the well-known smell had got worse over lockdown.
