Nizaam Carr has been selected in a national trial match for a shot at restarting his Springboks career.
He has been selected as the openside flanker in the Springbok Gold team that will tackle the Golds, captained by World Cup winning skipper Siya Kolisi, for the match on Saturday (4pm).
Both squads consist of 25 players who are currently based in South Africa.
Carr earned the most recent of his five Springboks caps in November 2016. His first of two spells at Wasps was on a three-month deal from the Stormers during the 2017/18 season when he scored three tries in his first four appearances in black and gold.
He returned to play Super Rugby in 2018 but was signed permanently by Wasps on a two-year that summer.
Carr was a mainstay in the side in both the 2018/19 and 2019/20 (pre-lockdown) seasons, amassing 45 appearances on the back row during a period in which his back-row rivals Jack Willis and Thomas Young made just 21 each and Brad Shields faring slightly better with 26.
Across his two spell, Carr would score 13 tries in 56 appearances – including in his last match against Gloucester in March.
After landing a dramatic late try in the victory over Bristol Bears in December 2019, Carr told CoventryLive he wanted to become a ‘Wasps legend’ and go on to make ‘100 or 150 or even 200 caps’.
However, after long contract negotiations, Carr’s exit was confirmed on June 12, with him joining South African Super Rugby side the Bulls.
Since returning to his homeland, Carr has expressed his desire to resume his international career as one of the key motivating factors.
Saturday’s clash between Springbok Green and Springbok Gold will be screened on Sky Sports Arena from 4pm on Saturday.
