Young yobs have been blasted for starting a blaze in a derelict Bedworth pub.

They set fire to wood in the basement of the British Queen last night (October 14).

Luckily firefighters from Nuneaton and Bedworth stations managed to stop the flames spreading to the rest of the empty building.

But a Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman from Nuneaton Fire Station said the consequences could have been far worse.

“These kids think its fun going into a derelict building and treating it like a playground,” he said.

“What they don’t realise is the dangers, what if they got stuck in there and we couldn’t get to them, the consequences could be awful for them.

“But they think it is exciting, they think it is fun but we can’t stress enough the dangers and hazards of doing things like this.”

As reported in our newsletter, police had to cordon off the road while firefighters tackled the blaze last night (October 13).

Crews from Nuneaton and Bedworth stations responded to 999 calls at just after 9pm.

Two firefighters kitted out in breathing apparatus were sent into the building to fight the flames with a hose reel.

They were on scene for around an hour and a half.
